| White oak stock, Walnut sideplates |
This is the Western European design that ranged from the 11th century well into the 16th century. It is one of the most common crossbow shapes that you will find depicted in period imagery. It is mostly square, with only a few curves along the bottom to allow for a forward handrest, and to allow for a thinner stock near the trigger (to make it easier to grip). |
